Assignment-ESL was to write a letter to the president from the potential  viewpoint of "Dr. Martin Luther King"

1850: My Letter to the Editor

Imagine that you are living in 1850. Slavery is l legal in the U.S. In the space below, write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper. Explain why you believe slavery should be abolished.

Dear Editor,

Within the Constitution of this nation, it states that “All men are created equal and have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”  If this is true, then the very existence of slavery and slaves breaks this nation’s law of the land. Slaves are just as much people as the whites are; we have the right to live freely within this nation and much more.  Think of it this way, if you saw a white, white child, women, or man about to be whipped would you let that man, women or child be whipped with the chance of it being an unfair whipping.  The clear answer is how, no white man, would win or watch another white man being whipped. So do the same for the slaves, free us from slavery and allow the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Dear President Donald Trump,

I respect your time but, there are some things that I would like to discuss with you. Some problems that are happening in the United States and are affecting many people.

One of the problems affecting our people is immigration. Immigration is separating families and taking them out of the country. The separation Mr. President is not making America Great, but instead, it is harming America and what the country represents. We all think that this country is a country of freedom and hope, but this situation is making it seem the opposite of it.

The people that we call immigrants are coming here for a new beginning and to have a better life for themselves and their families. I think that those people should have an opportunity to grow and pursue their desires of “The American Dream.” Mr. Trump you also want to build a wall that you think will stop people from migrating to the U.S.  The wall will only delay the process, but people will always migrate to the U.S. because of their hopes and desires to succeed. Mr. President think about, how different our future would have been if the Native Americans had built a wall and not allowed the Europeans to enter.

We all get your point about removing immigrants because some of them are rapists, drug dealers, and human trafficker but how do you plan to stop the Americans that are committing the same crimes as these so-called immigrant criminals.  The majority of immigrants are hard workers who only want to provide for their families here and back home.  There are many Americans who don't work as hard as immigrants.  In fact, Mr. President, there are more important things that our country needs to worry about than a wall.

I hope that you change your mind about what is important not what you want.

Thank You for your time!

Sincerely,

Martin Luther King
