Teen Entrepreneur Ideas-DIY "Flameworking"

by Nadirah Rivers

If money is something you like, consider flameworking. If conservation is something you’re passionate about then consider flameworking again. Flameworking is the art of melting and morphing glass to make different things. You can use recycled glass to make beautiful art and make money from it! But you have to take action, so if you’re a lazy couch potato snap out of it! Come on, don’t you want some money? (Disclaimer: you will have to spend money in the process but if you successfully follow through you will be compensated and receive much more remuneration as well!)

Step 1: Contact your closest flameworking studio

Take advantage of the convenience of google and look up “flameworking studios near me” and hopefully there will be one near you. If you don’t want to travel far, alternatively, you can buy your own flameworking equipment, set it up in your garage or a well ventilated area you can use daily. However, it is better that you are skilled in the art of flameworking( with hands on experience) before you decide to follow up in your own pursuit.

Step 2: Complete a beginner’s training course

This is the ideal and preferred route to take when beginning flameworking so that you can become informed on the hazards of flameworking, the safety precautions you should take, and of course learn so much about the various pieces of art you can create with flameworking!

Step 3: Gather a bunch of empty glass bottles!!

Recycle glass bottles that you use at home. They can even be found in your nearest dumpster, or depending on where you live, in the street outside of your house. Bring your new inventory to the flameworking shop for your next date.

All of the glass bottles you bring into the flameworking studio will be made into molten glass that you can then use to make your art.

I made some glass flower beads at a flameworking studio in Newark, New Jersey called GlassRoots. However, I didn’t use glass bottles to make my beads. Using recycled beads will reduce your carbon footprint, and in addition there are many people who are interested in recycling so that will also attract earth-conscious customers. Good luck with your business endeavors!
